Yes, the first movie in the Korean Revenge trilogy by Park was pretty slick (not quite as amazing like everyone says) but still a great example of Korean cinema and quite enjoyable. However, if complaints are going to be raised then remember that THE ORIGINAL Old Boy is a Japanese manga written in 1996 by Tsuchiya Garon. The literary version is a point. to Park chan-Wook's film, but IMO, superior in plot and especially character development. Granted, it wasn't a movie, but manga is not far off from how films are structured since it utilizes text and illustration and Old Boy is a fairly short manga and doesn't use a whole lot more verbal information than the Korean film. So, if people are going to be upset about Spike Lee ruining an original, make sure you know what the TRUE original format of the awesome story of Old Boy is first! Yes, the American version is somewhat of a ripoff of the original cinematic example of Park's version of Old Boy, however it can't be argued that it is an unnecessary movie that will disgrace Park's film because the Korean film is still very different than the actual original manga and Spike Lee is doing nothing different, from what can be seen so far, than what Park did with his movie as an adaptation to the Japanese original. Really both Park and Lee are just making different versions of the original Old Boy, updating the story and adapting it to fit better within their respective South Korean and American cultures while taking creative license, small and radically different, compared to Tsuchiya's modern classic (which won an Eisner Award in 2007) So, quit hating so much. Lee and Park are doing the same thing, Park just did it first and very well I might add. Also, the American adaptation may be even better, in terms of following the true original, and might be a great adaptation in its own right. Finally, if people are going to compare forms of Old Boy, make sure to analyze the films with the manga first and then proceed with bitching about or praising one film over the other. All in all. I am excited to see Spike Lee's adaptation of an awesome manga. I still really enjoy Park chan-Wook's film in its own right. I am pretty sure that Old Boy will be awesome in any media and is a story that deserves to be retold and reimagined for the pleasure of the masses and it is all thanks to Tsuchiya Garon's masterful creation of the TRUE Boy.
